Composite Utility Poles

Background

Wooden utility poles are often used to distribute electrical power to our towns and cities. Although the wooden poles are made from fast growing soft woods, they have to be chemically treated with preservatives which often leach out into the land and waterways. In addition, the wooden poles tend to internally rot over time, resulting in premature breakage in high winds or ice storms.

Solution

Since 1994, EPL has been researching and developing composite utility poles. This work has included:

  • Identifying optimum fibre and resin combinations
  • Fibre orientations and constructions of poles to meet international standards
  • Methods of manufacturing based on pultrusion and filament winding
  • Extensive mechanical and durability testing
  • Development of design software
  • Design, development and testing of case studies

Benefits

The benefits of composite utility poles includes:

  • Lightweight and ease of installation
  • Enhanced durability and longevity
  • Excellent through life cost savings
  • Self coloured

Commercialisation

EPL have assisted Resin Systems Inc to design and develop modular composite power poles. For further information, contact either EPL or www.grouprsi.com.
